about us

A-FFIX LLC is a Seattle-based general contracting company that specializes in home retrofit and earthquake preparation. It was founded by Bruce Schoonmaker in 1999 to meet the region's need for a quality contractor specializing in retrofit and other forms of earthquake preparation.

A-FFIX's mission is to provide earthquake preparation and education to and assist in securing the homes of Puget Sound's residents, with a strong commitment to honesty, integrity and excellence. The safety of you and your family, and of the community as a whole, is of the utmost importance to us.

Our company is insured, bonded and licensed in the state of Washington under license number AFFIXL*015KS. Verification of our license, bonding and insurance, as well as our unblemished record of service, may be obtained from the Department of Labor and Industries website. (Search for our business name, A-FFIX LLC.) We were also one of the first contracting companies to be certified by Seattle's Project Impact.

In 2006, A-FFIX LLC was commended by the City of Seattle for its service in helping to secure and educate the city. Bruce Schoonmaker, A-FFIX's founding member and manager, has served as a guest lecturer for Seattle Emergency Management and the University of Washington Tacoma, has taught Project Impact's homeowner retrofit class, and has led numerous preparation seminars at local venues ranging from the Phinney Ridge Community Center to Lowe's Hardware and Home Depot.   Bruce was a founding Board Member of Habitat for Humanity in Seattle, and served on Seattle Habitat's Board of Directors for twelve years between 1984 to 1997.

A-FFIX's commitment to the safety of the region, our concern for the welfare of our customers, and the high quality of our work give us confidence that we are the best in the business. Please check our references to see what past clients have had to say about us.

Along with retrofit (strengthening a structure's understructure), A-FFIX offers numerous other services to help prepare homes and businesses for earthquakes: securing interiors, applying protective windowfilm, providing emergency supplies and preparation advice, and restoring failing understructures beyond conventional retrofit. Our experience securing old houses with unconventional foundations, including foundations made of brick and cracked or deteriorating foundations, makes us a leading area specialist in foundation repair. We also do all types of general structural repair, including the restoration of beams and joists, pilings, and shoring and footing systems.

about the products we use

A-FFIX LLC handles many forms of earthquake preparation besides retrofit (securing a building structurally) and structural repair. We also secure the interiors of houses and businesses (using straps and mats to stabilize furniture, appliances and other objects that might be hazardous during an earthquake), apply windowfilm to glass to prevent shattering, and provide emergency supplies to ensure that your basic needs are provided for in the aftermath of a disaster.

Our company has thoroughly researched all of the products we offer to our customers, and we are confident that they are the highest quality, most reasonably priced on the market. We've found that Worksafe Technologies produces the most effective, most comprehensive array of seismic fasteners for both the home and office. Worksafe products are widely used by corporations around the world, and have consistently tested excellently. Our company also manages Worksafe's online store, EQHomesafety.com (visit to purchase earthquake safety items directly).

3-M, better known for its everyday office supplies, is the industry leader in protective windowfilm. Their Scotchshield film keeps glass securely in place even after it has been shattered, and is used around the world to secure airports, highrises, office buildings and homes.

We've met with the heads of Seismic Safety Products, the local company that manufactures the Northridge 2000 Automatic Gas Shut-Off Valve, and have been impressed with the superior design of their product and their commitment to customer safety.

A-FFIX has also personally interviewed the Emergency Lifeline, based in Southern California, and is confident that their supply kits, which we recommend and provide to our customers, are the best on the market.

Because we value our customers' safety and satisfaction, we've taken care in choosing the products we use. We will go the extra mile to ensure that our customers are as safe and well prepared as they can be.
